Tablets have seem to have already become a controversial issue. I want to make my opinion known from the start. I do not support tablets. I have done some research of my own. In order to keep cost at 30000 dollars each individual tablet could not exceed 100 dollars. A good tablet with all the the features we need is usually at least 200 dollars. Even with discounts it would still be around 150 dollars per tablet, if we are lucky. That is 45,000 dollars we would have to spend in one year alone. On top of that tablets will eventually break and we will have to replace them. I can practically guarantee the school board will not go along with this since they might be expected to fund us for future tablets. Right now the school system has no money so that is simply not an option. This means every year we would have to fund-raise, just for the purpose of tablets.
We already are more technologically advanced then the rest of McMahon with our mac lab. I hear people constantly complaining about this because many individuals don't like macs. There is a very good chance we will face the same problem with tablets. So why waste the money.
Also there is still the issue of classes in McMahon. The entire school will not use tablets so they will only be useful for 2-3 periods of the day. The rest of the day you are at risk of having your tablet broken or stolen while it sits in your backpack or locker.
Finally just think of how much EVERYONE could be benefited by lowering the overall cost of trips. If we could somehow raise this much money the trip would be so much more affordable to everyone. Also there could be more partial scholarships so more people will believe they have a chance at getting one.
I'd like to know how you intend on raising money. Promises are made year after year of what the student council will do, and each year despite having low expectations I'm always disappointed with their progress. I do agree with you that tablets are a useless waste of money, but I'd like to hear about what you intend on doing (with actual examples of your intentions) rather than just want you don't intend on doing.
ReplyDeleteIt will not let me edit so I shall include another comment. I will also set up polls to find out how people want to fundraise and if there are other things CGS as a whole would rather see the money go in to.
DeleteOne fundraiser that has worked in the past is movie nights. I have suggested asking for 5 dollars (as much as people ask for after school cooking) to anyone who comes to the movie. We will provide snacks and the movie can be provided by one of the students. This means the first part of the funds we get cn go into paying back the snacks. The rest goes into CGS funds. Some of this can go into cultural things. Another thing this could go into is the first ever CGS dance. Loads of people have expressed interest in it, but nothing has ever been done. Other fundraising ideas like this are car washes, and selling CGS apparel. This has always worked for the sports teams, so why not us. This way we wont have two large goals, such as tablets and cultural events (study tours/field trips/in school shows). Instead we will have one large goal and smaller goals for CGS as a whole.
